âThe strange thing is that Gantheim believed that this mine contained only, or primarily, two-six-oh.â Charles was standing outside the tunnel leading to the radioactive minerals with Kate and Antonia while some of his people extracted samples from the rock. Kateâs objections regarding the mining of the required fuel for the columns had been brushed aside with a comment that samples were needed for assay anyway.
âPerhaps he was simply not told,â Antonia suggested. âOr the Germans had insufficient knowledge of Unobtainium extraction to make this tunnel useful.â
âThe former is a possibility. Falk knew almost as much as I do concerning the extraction process. He was my grandfatherâs assistant.â
âI am more concerned about the radiation hazard,â Kate stated flatly. âYou have often impressed upon me the difficulties of handling two-five-seven, Sharles.â
âAnd I stand by my previous statements,â Charles replied. âHowever, the ores tend to be quite weakly radioactive, becoming more dangerous when refined. Why this happens is still something of a mystery.â
âMy education continues. It seems odd that there is no mention in the instructions that the ore needs to be refined.â
âAgreed. The step may be assumed. Refining requires chemical processing which would be difficult to describe in pictures. However, it is a simple matter to attempt the activation as described, and then make another attempt with refined material if we fail.â
âWe are still both unhappy with this experiment, Charles,â Antonia said.
âI assure you, Antonia, that I shall be ensuring that all due precautions are taken in this matter. Should anything go wrong, we will be ready for it.â
âI am quite sure you will handle such failures with your usual skill, Charles. It is not failure which concerns me, but success. How, I ask, does one make plans for conversing with a god?â
